Abstract Applications of lithium-ion batteries are widespread, ranging from electric vehicles to energy storage systems. In spite of nearly meeting the target in terms of energy density and cost, enhanced safety, lifetime, and second-life applications, there remain challenges. As a result of the difference between the electric characteristics of the cells, the degradation process is accelerated for battery packs containing many cells. A novel concept of Smart Battery that brings together batteries with advanced power electronics and artificial intelligence (AI) is presented. The key feature is a bypass device attached to each cell that can insert relaxation time to individual cell operation with minimal effect on the load. An advanced AI-based performance optimizer is trained to recognize early signs of accelerated degradation modes and to decide upon the optimal insertion of relaxation time. The resulting pulsed current operation has been proven to extend lifetime by up to 80% in laboratory aging conditions. The Smart Battery unique architecture uses a digital twin to accelerate the training of performance optimizers and predict failures. The Smart Battery technology is a new technology currently at the proof-of-concept stage. About the Speaker Remus Teodorescu received Ph.D. degree in power electronics from the University of Galati in 1994 and Dr.HC in 2016 from Transilvania University of Brasov. In 1998, he joined the Department of Energy Technology at Aalborg University where he is currently a Full Professor. Between 2013 and 2017, he was a Visiting Professor with Chalmers University. He is the founder and current coordinator of the Center of Research for Smart Battery at Aalborg University focusing on improving the performance of Li-Ion battery packs in transportation and energy sector by using power electronics and artificial Intelligence. He is currently the recipient of the prestigious Villum Investigator Project: Smart Battery 2021-2027. His main current research areas are: Smart Batteries , AI techniques for future BMS, Modular Multilevel Converters (MMC) for HVDC/FACTS, Power Converters for PV, Wind Turbines and Battery storage systems Organizers This event is jointly organized by the IEEE IAS/PELS/IES Joint Chapter Austria, IEEE PES Chapter Austria, and AIT Austrian Institute of Technology - Center for Energy. |
