Power Electronics is one of the key technologies for the energy transition. Two of Austria’s largest research centers for electronic systems – AIT Austrian Institute of Technology and Silicon Austria Labs (SAL) have joined forces to organize this event as a meeting point for industry and academia in central Europe. The Power Electronics for Energy Transition Symposium will focus on newest technology for Medium-voltage power electronics, Grid-forming systems (AC and DC), Electrification of industrial processes and E-mobility – from Automotive to Aerospace. Abstract: Most trajectories of energy demand and supply to 2050 anticipate significant new system challenges as we incorporate more low carbon generation, and meet increases in peak demand, driven largely by the extent to which transport and heating become increasingly electrified. At the same time, the energy landscape is changing rapidly with far-reaching implications for the global energy industry and actors. Some changes are already happening. Changes to energy grid management are underway and utility companies are developing commercial platforms that will make it easier for them to trade in flexibility with generators and consumers, even at very small scale. Renewable are also becoming key players. Harvesting renewable energies implies decentralization, where many consumers also become producers, who at times export electricity to the grid. To accommodate large numbers of renewable resources, energy distribution and transmission networks need to be adapted and expanded to avoid network congestion and failures. Flexibility options and services have to be also enabled not only at the supply side but also through responsive loads and suitable means of energy storage to maximize the security of supply and the quality of service in the most efficient way. Accelerating the energy transition also requires a rethinking of electricity markets in many aspects, a key one being the adaptation of their design and operation to support higher shares of variable renewables as well as distributed power generation. This talk covers the aforementioned promising areas in green energy transition and discusses the current and future opportunities and challenges exist in this context. Short Bio: Amjad Anvari-Moghaddam (S’10–M’14–SM’17) is a Full Professor and Leader of the of Intelligent Energy Systems and Flexible Markets (iGRIDS) Research Programme at the Department of Energy (AAU Energy), Aalborg University, where he is the founder and coordinator of the Integrated Energy Systems Laboratory (IES-Lab). His research interests include planning, control and operation management of microgrids, renewable/hybrid power systems and integrated energy systems with appropriate market mechanisms. He serves as an alternate Member of Council for Energy Efficient Transition at the Danish Ministry of Climate, Energy and Utilities, a member of Reference Group 5 “Climate, Energy and Mobility” for Horizon Europe (HE) at the Danish Agency for Education and Research (UFS), a Board Member of Energy Mission at Aalborg University, and the Chair of IEEE Denmark Section. He has authored more than 300 technical articles, 11 books and 23 book chapters in the field. Prof. Anvari-Moghaddam is the Editor-in-Chief of Academia Green Energy journal and serves as the Associate Editor of several leading journals. He is a member of IEC SC/8B- Working Group (WG3 & WG6) as well as Technical Committee Member of several IEEE PES/IES/PELS and CIGRE WGs.

Simulation is an essential tool to manage the complexity of modern energy systems and to define effective solutions for planning, designing and operating energy systems. Energy systems are expected to include electricity, gas, and heat networks - to maximize the use of all available forms of energy - and to include storage capacity. The distributed nature of new resources (generation and storage) and the participation of loads in energy management require fast, reactive control and protection. In this context, it is expected that the monitoring and control of modern energy systems will be characterized by the distribution of functions. At the same time, a large use of communication media is envisioned. The interactions between continuous dynamics and discrete events are becoming more relevant due to the increasing number of controllable devices (e.g., power electronic converters in power grids) and the use of networked control systems. In addition, power systems are increasingly driven by market competition, and the impact on system operation should also be considered. In this context, several research groups have developed modelling and simulation solutions to address these challenges, and they have disseminated their software using an open-source approach. The workshop will address all aspects related to the use and development of open source tools for power and energy systems modelling and simulation. The main objective of the workshop is to foster discussion on these topics among experts from academia, industry and utilities.
